Transition Dressing and the LGD

It's cold - it's warm - it's in-between! Hmmnn...sometimes it's a reflection of the temperature on the outside and sometimes - the temperature on the 'inside!'

Applying the standard of the iconic Tim Gunn, can we find a go-to plus size woman's dress and "make it work?" Yes, Tim, we can! We're going to substitute a little gray dress (LGD) for a little black dress (LBD).

In Feng Shui, each color brings a different quality of energy. "Noble gray" is treated as a sophisticated, upscale Feng Shui color and is worth considering when building a little flexibility and transitional quality around a LGD. Three Ulla plus size dresses that seem particularly 'noble' are:

Some guidelines that ease the transition between cool and warm temperatures:

Knits that are lightweight but not clingy.

In the cooler months:

Wear with opaque tights with (black, metallic or gray) flats or boots
Layer with a mid-weight neutral or black cardigan
Choose black, metallic or neutral accessories

In the warmer months:

Wear with bare legs and ballet flats
Layer with a light weight neutral or colorful cardigan
Choose colorful jewelry and other accessories that coordinate with the cardigan

Until I Lose Weight - NOT!

Those pants won't look good until I lose weight. How often has that tape circulated in my mind? Too often!

I was blessed with 'thunder thighs." No, it's true. When I was younger and played tennis, volleyball and softball, I got great strength from my lower half and it helped me compete successfully. But that was m-a-n-y years ago.

Now, I have to give extra thought to the pants I choose and I have often stayed away from leggings for that reason. Some of the sound bites that ran through my head were, "Gee, I love the look of leggings and I wish I could wear them" or "Those leggings won't look good until I lose weight." or "Only thin women get to wear leggings - unfair!" Well guess what, I didn't lose any weight and the shape and size of my thighs have remained the same.

That said, here's a picture of me wearing plus size bottoms, leggings, specifically. I made choices that made a great pair of leggings work for me.

I chose:

a longer, flashy top, to draw attention upward.
hot accessories to steal the show.
the boot cut legging to balance larger thighs.
a legging fabric that has great weight and stretch to keep things smooth. (14621, Stretch Ponte Boot Cut Knit Leggings)
a color that was deep and neutral (they come in gray and black)

The rub, so to speak, wasn't about "Those pants won't look good until I lose weight," but rather in making smart choices to pick the right pair of plus size womans leggings and make them look good on me here and now.

Finding the Energy to Move Forward, Beautifully

One of the most bizarre things about working in the fashion industry is how much in advance of the season we plan or even photograph a collection. We took the pictures for Babe's Picks for Spring in November. Frankly, my heart and mind was filled with the Holidays.

That being said, I just saw the new lay-out for Babe's Picks and I can't tell you how happy it made me, it actually put a spring in my step. The clothing is so fresh, colorful and energized and the fabrics are soft, upscale and lean. Thinking about it for a while, I realized, sometimes I need a push to move forward. One of my New Year's resolutions is to intuit good energy around me, 'wear it' and allow it to move me forward. Where can you find that 'good energy' though?

Let's talk about 'wearing good energy' for a moment, both metaphorically and literally. As a metaphor, it inspires me to be attuned to positive vibes from people, places and things, and thereby uplift my attitude, my presence and my impact in my own small corner of the world. Literally, it raises my fashion quotient which I then parlay to do much of the same, uplift my attitude, my presence and my impact in the world. Here's my recipe, and the best part is that you can uplift yourself, that is, find 'good energy' right in your closet:

Choose an empowering silhouette, one that flatters and propels you fashion-forward.
Choose color that uplifts your skin tone and spirit.
Choose sensuous accessories that make you feel pretty and feminine.
Choose cuts and fabrics that help you to be comfortable in your own skin.

My Ulla Takes Me Everywhere

The holidays are a hectic time, no doubt.

On Friday night, December 9th, my husband asked me if I'd go with him to the holiday Open House at our golf club on Sunday, December 11th for prospective new members! I turned my head toward him, rolled my eyes trying to affect an "are you nuts?!?" look. But he quickly interjected, "Oh come on, I'd like to sponsor Randy for membership." Oh great, now Randy's golf membership is on my holiday to-do list too!

Then I thought for a moment, I really didn't need more time than that. I figured 'what's the big deal?' I don't need to shop, clean or cook for it and with Ulla I have a great outfit, holiday sparkled, at the ready. So I said, "Sure, why not? Yes, in fact, I'd love to go!"

We went and had a great time. Everyone was in a festive mood. The club looked gorgeous and the buffet and holiday punch was delicious. I chatted with Randy for a bit and was reminded how lonely he was at Christmastime. His wife passed away four years ago and it had happened during the holiday season. He told me how excited he was to join the Club, give himself the gift of membership for Christmas and how having golf to look forward to in the Spring would make the holidays so much easier.

Then I recalled that I had almost said "no" to going to the Open House to sponsor Randy. I was disappointed in my selfishness, perhaps more so at this Season. There was a time in my life, that a last minute invitation gave me anxiety because I worried about how I'd put a flattering outfit together with limited time. Perhaps subconsciously, a little of that fear may linger.

Today, I have Ulla in my closet and the message I have for my sistas who wear plus size is that there should never be a time when you decline an invitation because you fear you 'having nothing to wear.' Life is just too short for that!

The Life of One Spectacular Jacket

My grandmother was truly elegant. It was a different time and a different place, but even now, although my lifestyle is pretty casual, I long to 'be a lady' once in a while.

When my grandmother was almost 50, a frightened three year old little girl came to live with her and Gramps - me. She went 'to business' every day but managed to be a mother to me, attend my school functions, and keep our family together.

She didn't have a ton of clothing and jewelry, but what she had was well-chosen, even spectacular. She wore Pauline Trigere and Abe Schrader, got her hair done on Tuesdays and 'combed out' on Fridays, while those around her looked like they shopped at Woodstock.

When she'd visit my school, I was so proud of her. She moved quietly. It was only in meeting up with my former elementary school teacher a few years ago, that I learned that the envelope I carried to school each Monday with my milk money had enough in it for every child in the school who didn't have milk money. She raised the bar on elegance in our provincial little town, without being pretentious - she was quite a lady.

Understandably, I'd reminisce during the holidays, but there's something in the Ulla collection that prompted me to write this, the Sequined Swing Jacket, #15340. My grandmother had a similar sequin cardigan and a coordinating sequin handbag that she wore for at least 30 years. Why? Because it complemented everything she owned. It was a gracious, elegant combo and she carried it well. So, why change it? That's how she bought - for the long term.

When holidays or family celebrations came around, she didn't need to run out for a new dress. Quite the contrary, what she already owned transcended the decades and snickered at the fashion trends because they were already so right, spot-on and always worked well for her. I can picture the dresser drawer where her special cardigan and handbag waited at the ready, to be called up for yet one more celebration. The memory of the fragrance of that drawer with its delightful orange and clove sachet overwhelms me now.

Three Steps to Holiday Polish

Black Friday came and went.

The goal of 'Context, Proportion and Comfort for the Holidays' remains.

Time to set up a few go-to outfits that can take me everywhere I need to go over the next month or so. Holiday traditions and shopping are revving up and so am I. Here's one of my go-to outfits and I thought I'd share my thought process with you.

Three Questions:

Question #1:
Can one outfit take me to work, to shopping and still later in the evening to a social gathering?

Response:
Remember my last post? Build from the bottom - up. I'm loving my Matte Jersey Straight Leg Pants, 02635.

Reason:
Comfort and sleek tops my list of dressing priorities when I've got people to see and places to go!

Question #2:
Can the outfit be tweaked to reflect the context and joy of the Holidays and my size as a plus size woman?

Response:

Early Plus Size Clothing Holiday Musings

Earlier this week, a client invited me to lunch to discuss refreshing her wardrobe for the holidays. She arrived, decked out in an outfit I had styled for her two years ago. Back then, it looked great. Now, however, it no longer looked so flattering. What had changed? The style? Not really. The color palette? Nope.

Lets be honest, what had changed was that she either had gained some weight or her weight had redistributed itself around her tummy.Gosh, can I related to that, or what!

So I had a choice, do I bring it up or wait and see if she does. I figured I'm here to help and certainly I know first-hand of what I speak. I broached the topic by saying, "Talk to me, you seem uncomfortable." She looked at me, held my glance for an extra second, burst into tears but managed to blurt out, "Babe, I turned 50 last year and almost to the day my tummy popped out, I'm so uncomfortable in everything I own - What a birthday present!" Ah, the old "menopot" strikes again!

I can't change menopause but I do have a tip that can help and I think you'll appreciate it all the more as the holidays get closer. Build an outfit from the bottom up. Recently. I learned the term "psycho-graphic," and as a stylist and blogger, it really turned me on! Typically, merchandisers look to the traditional elements of demographics to produce items that will be purchased by plus size baby boomers

Let's look for a moment, however, at who we are; a psycho-graphic peek, and what that might mean for the clothing we buy:

1. We don't dress like our mothers did. Which means we are figuring it out for the first time, for ourselves.
2. We believe 50 is the new 40 and reject the traditional boundaries of middle age.
3. We dress to please ourselves.
4. The balance between "fade" and "focus" is a continuous, but creative challenge.
5. We seek harmony between self-adornment, self-improvement and self-esteem.
6. Our spending power is staggering.

So what does this have to do with dressing? Quite a lot. I appreciate having access to clothing that projects my concept of self-worth to the world, fits comfortably and looks amazing!

Recently, I was thrown for a loop. A relative whom I hadn't seen in 18 years came to Baltimore and we had dinner together. Seemingly in a time-warp, I was transported back to being "such a pretty face" which was really a euphemism for being fat. CRASH! BOOM! BANG! STOP! ...Put the brakes on that 'stinkin' thinkin' Babe!

The moment passed and I got dressed for dinner in Little Italy. I have tools and insights I didn't have 18 years ago and no one, I repeat, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Smart Dressing that's Not Studied

Have you ever noticed a woman who always seems to be well-dressed? Adjectives like smart, elegant, effortlessly-put-together seem to radiate from her? You can be that woman too!

The trick is to find a few 'uniforms' that work with your silhouette and lifestyle and refresh them seasonally. One example is the inner black column (tank and pant) with a go-to cardigan or jacket.

A Good Coat - The Cornerstone of Confidence

Full Body Photo Project

I met a very smart young woman in cyberspace, Jessica Kane. She reminded me how important it is for a woman to appreciate her whole body. After all, it is your whole body that makes your life happen, not just your head. The Full Body Photo Project is a celebration of all of YOU! The Project invites women who wear plus size to share a full body photo of themselves on a collective site. Several plus size specialty retailers are sponsoring the Project and offering prizes, of course Ulla Popken is a co-sponsor as well.

I remember back to the days when I was ashamed of my body because I was fat and the world of plus size fashion was lean. A lot has changed since then on many levels:

* The paradigm has been changed forever - from the pity party to the pretty party!

Whew! What a relief!

When A Bargain is a Bargain

Every woman I know loves a bargain. I'm no exception and neither are my girlfriends. So when is a bargain just that?

Look for bargains that freshen, replenish and expand your wardrobe. When shopping sales it is best to choose apparel you have some familiarity with.

Recently, a friend of mine, who shops Ulla, asked me to help her spend up to $100 to freshen her Fall wardrobe. Separately, in the comfort of home, we simultaneously went online to the Sale page of the Ulla site.

Here's what we chose:

2 Items that Cover 4 Sizes

Reluctant to buy clothing when your weight is in flux? That's understandable, clothing is an investment. Still, it's important to look good, feel good and be your personal best all the times.

In fact, the wedge dress, well-edited at the knee, is very flattering because it has more length with which to extend the narrowing effect. Look for a cocoon or wedge shape. This will allow you room while you are larger and still look shapely when you are smaller.

Buy the smaller size and add a 1/4 inch Dolman shoulder pad - it will sharpen the shoulder line creating a prettier drape. Ulla's sizing is 12/14, 16/18 and 20/22... While I usually wear the 20/22, for these two items, I would go down a size. The cut already gives me extra room where I need it. I don't need more fabric or bulk, where I don't.

Richness, Depth and You

The wine, aubergine, and berry palettes that are flattering on so many women are abundant in our Fall and Winter collections - and for good reason: they work well for many complexions and especially well for women who are over forty. When Black is Not Enough

I wear a lot of black and have no plans to change that in the near future. The color black absorbs light so it disguises lumps and bumps; and therefore trumps all other colors for looking sleek. End of post? Not so fast!

There are other colors, fabrics and surface textures that do a great job of concealing puffy areas; when used together, they should not be overlooked.

Choose rich soft neutrals and jewel tones
Avoid weaves and textures that create bulk
Choose a fabric with a matte surface quality for areas you want to "fade" (down-play)
Choose a fabric with a shiny surface quality for areas you want to "focus" (draw attention to)

There are several Ulla fabrics, essentially in the matte jersey family, that bid a broader selection of color, and you can still be confident you'll look sleek: viscose rayon spandex, viscose rayon, modal rayon and polyester blends (especially with spandex.)

The Silver Lining

Tone-On-Tone Dressing

"The best color in the world is the one that's right on you." So said Coco Channel.

A tone-on-tone outfit will always looked pulled-together, expensive and have depth. Tonal dressing is different from monochromatic dressing in that it is not necessarily one color from head to toe. Yet it is easy and fail-proof.

Here are two takes on the look:

1. Layering items of a wonderful flattering color near the face and enriching it with similarly colored accessories (slacks can still be black and jeans work too.) For example, this season Ulla is using raspberry and aubergine colors that have coordinating accessories like tonal impact necklaces, scarves, handbags and footwear. Necklaces and scarves are always a stylish way to bring colors together and draw the eye upward.

2. Working with a similar palette (not the exact same color or tone) head-to-toe. Select one of your most skin-flattering colors to create combinations that have the lightest tone at the top, a midtone meeting point and the darkest at the bottom. This could be a.) a light camisole, a midtone jacket and darker slacks, or b.) a tunic that gets deeper as the eye moves downward over dark slacks.

Darker at the bottom will ground your look and create a sleek pathway to your footwear. In fact, you can elongate your silhouette by choosing a shoe that matches your hem. Wear a black shoe or strong color when wearing dark slacks or jeans, the eye is drawn straight to the feet, inferring extra height.

I often recommend "build from the bottom...up." If you look in your closet, I think you'll find at least four tops for every bottom you own. Nothing wrong with that, but here's some new inspiration to try.

Only Good Shoes Worn Here

There is no way to appear assured, pretty and sexy when your feet hurt. It changes everything – from an aching body, feet, legs and back to an aching disillusioned spirit.

Uncomfortable shoes change the way we walk, how much we walk, and how much we complain about walking.

The corollary is bad too. Many women have opted out of wearing good-looking shoes and instead wear shoes that should be restricted to gardening or work as a correctional officer in a maximum security prison. It doesn’t have to be that way!

At Ulla, we all know “Joe knows shoes!” (Joe is the shoe buyer at Ulla.) While a majority of our customers choose good-looking flats, Joe has given us other beautiful options too. I wear a size nine, double wide and thankfully, there is as much for me to choose from, in Ulla’s collection, as anyone else. Yesss!

A New Generation of Shapewear

There’s no doubt that shapewear can be a friend with benefits. The object is to find intimates that shape, smooth, and firm. Look for items made of soft, substantial, stretchy materials to enjoy a sleek silhouette and still remain comfortable.

Choose wisely:

Undergarments that hold you in too tightly in one area usually create an unattractive bulge in another area - “Being held in” is less beneficial than being “smoothed out.”

Buy intimates that have no seams or lace that show through clothing -Smooth is always the goal.

Do not buy an item that is too small for you thinking that it will make you look slimmer and better - It won’t.

If an item shrinks or you get larger - Get rid of it.

If shapewear loses its firmness or shape - Replace it.

This season I took my own advice, opened my mind, and revisited an item I had previously sworn off, and I’m glad I did. The Ulla Body Wrap Soft Cup Bodysuit is such an item. New generations of fabrication have simply improved the effectiveness and comfort of shapewear, immeasurably – and may, therefore, be an old friend worth getting to know again.

What’s a Smart-Cut Camisole?

The latter half of summer can be tricky in terms of balancing the desire to keep cool and look great. I have a few favorite items that do a fantabulous job of both. While they’re from our Fall collection, they are nevertheless light weight and somewhat sheer. (Come on now, stay open-minded!)

Introducing a few great tunics in our recent video, Ulla VP for Merchandising, Diane Cantor reassured us that she was hearing our concern for fabrics that are too sheer versus fabrics that are opaque and often bulky.

Today I want to focus on a certain type of Ulla tunic that is so appropriate to be worn in late summer and well into the Fall. The two tunics pictured here are very light weight but they come with a “magic bullet.” Each of them comes with their own tonally matched slinky opaque camisole – brilliant!

So what’s so great about that? The barely-there camisole is smart-cut; it creates a flattering outline, hardly visible under the tunic but yet enough to provide excellent coverage and enough to manufacture a very flattering silhouette. New Fabric Born at Ulla!

What if I told you there was a fabric that was so flattering and comfortable that it would make you look sleek in a snap? There is such a fabric! For the time being, we are calling it viscose spandex (because that’s what it is) but that name doesn’t begin to extol its virtues!

I’m talking about a fabric that is being launched in our Fall collection. I love it for several reasons:

It has enough weight to support the line of the garment
It’s soft, stretchy and not bulky

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the US commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. I love clothing that sets the mood and conveys a message. I became an author and stylist for women who wear plus size as an act of catharsis. Selfishly, I challenged clothing and style to facilitate the life I wanted to live but found that it connected me to my sistas in deeper ways I could never have imagined. Just when I thought it was about improving one’s appearance, I learned it was more about improving one’s life.

While a beautiful wardrobe is not the ultimate achievement in life, I’ve found, and many of my clients have found, it’s a great place to start, because it is a tangible act of self-love and self-respect.

In fact, it is the beginning of telegraphing your worth to the world. Personally, I find so many Ulla styles do just that because they’re stylish, flattering, and thankfully, comfortable. The jacket I’m wearing in our recent video is long and sleek and the camisole is rich with metallic embellishment, a pretty-combo, a power-combo. Often, the right outfit makes my confidence soar and subtly says to the world, “stand back – she’s going for it!”

My Personal Best

Our son’s high school graduation came and went. It was beautiful, truly a moment to savor. It was gratifying on more than one level.

I remember when our son entered the school, a prep school, how proud we were. A little daunted by the costs but overjoyed by the opportunity. Yet, I wondered, (as a family,) can we keep up? Self-interestedly, in the back of my mind, I actually thought, “How do I stack up against the other mothers? Ninety-nine percent of them are thin, exercised, well-coiffed and look, effortlessly, like they belong in a Ralph Lauren ad. Guess what? I don’t and never will, but much has happened for me in 12 years – I’ve embraced being my personal best.

The day was warm and the sun soaked through the mature trees. One thousand seats were set up outside Founders Hall. We arrived a half hour early but found that most of the seats were already filled or reserved. As we made our way to find 3 seats together I got an opportunity to check out the “landscape.”

Yes, I’m probably still the heaviest mother of the class, and (not but) I looked terrific! Frankly, I looked great 12 years ago too, but was looking in the wrong mirror. What’s different for me now, and the reason I connect with Ulla Popken, is that it’s all about looking and being your personal best, regardless of your weight or size. Trust me, there were countless women there, who weighed half of what I weigh, who were not at their personal best.

Amazing Grace Tops

Look in your closet, the tops have it four to one. For every bottom we own, we probably own four tops. Purchasing a new top is a quick way to create a new look, a fresh look, with minimal expense.

I’ve coined the phrase Amazing Grace Tops when a top boasts four features:

It enhances YOU; your skin tone and coloring look amazing.

Look for tops that make your eyes pop and accent it with tonal jewelry.

It falls in a graceful drape that flatters (doesn’t try to hide) your curves.

Avoid boxy shapes and stiff fabrics. If you’re constantly pulling at or fluffing the top to make it stand away from puffy areas, it’s the wrong top for you.

It’s long enough to make you feel comfortable and pretty with your every move.

Try it on in the comfort of your home; sit, stand, walk and move around in ways that reflect your real-life activities.

It has a contemporary vibe.

A smaller investment than other wardrobe pieces, choose tops that are a little flashy, even trendy and well-embellished. Be playful!

Elements of Good Design

You can count the elements of good design on one hand. Look for items that provide these five features and you’ll be a discerning shopper who has left the days of feeling like a desperate buyer in the dust!

Frame your face. Choose tops with beautiful, open necklines that frame your expressive face.

Shape your torso. Define your shoulders, select shaping cuts and sleek fabrics that enhance your curves.

Elongate your silhouette. Use details like a linear row of buttons, vertical seaming as well as color, monochromatic and tonal palettes, to draw your longest line, head to toe.

Fade, camouflage, areas you feel are less attractive. Use deep toned, matte fabrics and gently grazing cuts to fade.

Focus, bring attention to areas which you love! Select rich, wonderful embellishments that reflect what’s fun and exciting for the season.

Every woman is born with a best feature. Some spotlight it well and others can't seem to find it with a magnifying glass. This post is about 1.) finding and refining your best features or 2.) manufacturing great features where nature may have shortchanged you.

When we first "met" I told you I'd share a few of my epiphanies and here is one: My thick curly brown hair started to thin when I was young. After wearing my hair pulled back in a chignon for many years (to hide the thin spots) the conditioned worsened. So I visited a wig shop, left a blond bombshell and never looked back. I chose a light two toned blended blond shade with (borderline trashy) dark roots showing. It has become my signature style.

Is there some trade-off? I guess a little. There are times when my son is pitching in an early springtime baseball game, the wind is blowing ferociously, my hairdo wrapped in a silk scarf, I'm wearing bold black sunglasses and doing a pretty good job of affecting a movie star look. At times like these, however, I'm worrying more about whether my lid will blow off than if my son strikes out the next batter. But I can cope. Blond bombshells can, you know.

Here are some enhancing "signatures" to consider: ·

Whiter Teeth - A great smile does increase confidence, makes you and the people around you happier. ·
Manicure and Pedicure - "Act as if..." Act as if you live the lifestyle of which you dream. ·
Fragrance - The olifactory sense is among the most powerful of the human senses. Own it. ·
Skin - You can create beautiful skin and it's well worth the effort. ·
Safe Tanning - Want to look slimmer, richer and healthier in minutes? ·
Jewelry - Does it have to be real? No. It has to be bold, memorable, proportionate to your stature and it has to enhance YOU!

Custom Fit: Top Three Alterations

Some of my (new) clients balk when I suggest alterations. If getting an item altered seems time-consuming and indulgent, think of it this way - you’d have to log months at the gym to come close to what a tailor can achieve in minutes. Alterations can make you look 20 pounds thinner!

The Matte Jersey Essential Dress illustrates the bullets well.

Here are my top three alterations:

Separate your arms from your torso.

Shortening long sleeves to three-quarter or elbow length reduces the appearance of width at hip level. The distinction from fabric to skin, torso to arms, is fresh and slenderizing. Bare skin on the forearm is a great backdrop for beautiful jewelry.

Show-off legs.

Every woman has a “most attractive” place on her legs. Shorten skirts or dresses to just above that attractive place on you. The eye will be drawn to where the fabric ends. Personally, I have some nice shapeliness just below my knee, so I choose the bottom of my knee for my best length.

Accent your natural waist.

Trim excess fabric in tops with well-placed darts to suggest contour at your natural waist which is the narrowest place on your torso. Tailor bottoms so that they are fitted to your natural waist and drape from that point.

Alterations allow us to look our best right here, right now - not in ten pounds. A custom fit expands our reach from “ready-to-wear” to “lucky-to wear,” great fit was formerly reserved for couture. Not anymore!

Tribute to the Skort: Active-wear and Beyond

I’m not just an Ulla stylist, I’m an Ulla customer. As I write this message, I’m comfortably wearing Ulla’s Must-have Skort, and I might add, looking sleek and fresh. This is not always an easy accomplishment as the weather gets warm. Today, I want to get personal; I want to talk about chafing.

I want to tell you a story in the words of one of my first clients.

I was shopping in the mall and wearing a denim skirt. I was hot and uncomfortable and squatting every few steps (separating my thighs) because I was developing painful welts between my thighs as I walked. I thought I was being discreet, but I guess I wasn’t.

This big, beautiful stranger came up to me, looked me straight but compassionately in the eye and said, “Follow me, I can hook you up with relief in about 10 minutes.” I followed her to a lingerie department where she introduced me to biker’s shorts (a shaper that comes mid-way down the thigh.) AHHH!!! I haven't chafed since. When we parted she said, “We don’t have to chafe anymore.” And when she said “we” - I knew she meant it. (Debra B.)

Girlfriends - I need your help!

Our son’s high school graduation is a month away and I need to pick a great outfit! I want to look elegant, sleek and pretty; I want to feel good in what I wear.

To do that, I must select an outfit that is well-designed – namely, one that minimizes visual weight, which is the illusion that the body is larger than it really is. Visual weight is often created through the use of saturated color and extra fabric in terms of the fullness and length of the style.

You may know what I look like from my U.P. Life pictures and videos, and therefore what you think would be flattering, but please keep in mind “visual weight” and a couple of other considerations too: it will be very warm and I prefer to keep my upper arms covered.

I’ve narrowed it to three outfits that I love.

Pick a fresh, fabulous color! I love lavender and shades of cool-lavender love me. Here’s a three-point test.

When you walk into a room or peruse rich colors in clothing, what color pops out and makes you happy?
In natural daylight, examine the area beneath your eyes. If it’s deep blue or purple, choose cool tones. If it’s yellow, green or brown, choose warm tones.
Bring an item of that color, in a cool or warm tone close to your face, if your face lights up and imperfections seem to fade, it’s your color!

Warm tones tend to include reds, pinks, and oranges. Cool tones include blues, greens, and purples. Choose coordinated items, head to toe, for a pulled-together, polished look. Here's a cool-tone collection I've put together for myself.

Fade and Focus

“To thine own self be true.” Yup, Shakespeare got it over 400 years ago and some of us still struggle with it today. My concept of Fade and Focus is about knowing yourself, heart and body, and pretty-partying accordingly.

Heart: it’s all about selecting styles that reflect your life style, comfort zone, aesthetic sensibilities as well as that which you aspire to become.

Body: it’s about minimizing and distracting from your larger, puffier areas (fade) and identifying your most attractive areas and putting the spotlight there (focus).

Some women find it difficult to acknowledge their most attractive areas. It isn’t their fault it is the result of a lifetime of media, with the help of Mattel, lauding the virtues of Barbie-doll-proportioned women. Academics from the University of South Australia suggest the likelihood of a woman having Barbie's body shape is one in 100,000. Other reports make Barbie even more unrealistic.

Here’s an exercise I want you to try:

Privately, stand in front of a full-length mirror (dressed is fine.) Emotionally, step outside yourself, stand off to the side and become your best girlfriend, or someone specific, who loves you. From their perspective, tell the person standing in front of the mirror, what her most attractive features are and remind her that she is lovely and you love her. Those are the attributes (face, hair, eyes, skin tone, shoulders, neck, décolletage, arms, hands, legs, etc.) you must trust and highlight!

Here’s a glimpse of Fade and Focus for me in this video. I love my face, hair, décolletage, forearms, hands, legs, ankles and my height. I choose to “fade” my tummy, hips, thighs and upper arms.

Vertical Storylines

What do 6 foot, size 2 models and real women like us have in common? We both hang our prettiest silhouette on the longest looking body line possible, the former are born with it and we must create it. And that’s okay, because we can.

Your tallest silhouette hangs on two things.

The line of the outfit:

Keep the silhouette narrow and worn close to the body. Choose soft fabrics that drape. Select tone on tone or monochromatic palettes, and vertically designed details like, seaming, single breasted jackets and zip-front jackets.

The fit of the clothing:

Choose intimates that smooth but don’t restrict. A perennial favorite are the Ulla-la! short panties. They do just that and are a great deal starting at $14. Wardrobe Building: A Foundation of Physical and Emotional Comfort

Shopping for plus size women can be either exhausting or exhilarating – the choice is yours. To make it fun and productive, I suggest three things:

Develop a Pretty Party Portfolio
Inventory your closet ruthlessly
Develop a shopping plan

A Pretty Party Portfolio is a plastic accordion envelope with 12 compartments. This becomes the place where you identify and organize your wish list. Each time you come across something that intrigues you from a magazine or catalog, cut it out and put it in the correct section (tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets, footwear, jewelry, handbags, etc.). While you may not purchase the specific item you’ve identified, often you can replicate the style or feature that is appealing in an item that is appropriate for you. This is how you inform and inspire yourself before shopping, and get real bang for your buck!

Next, inventory your closet. If you haven’t worn it in a year or more, repair, donate or trash it. If an item is attractive but not right for you for any reason, physical or emotional, let it go, make room for the things you love and will wear. I’ve heard it said that women do NOT wear between 70-80% of what’s in their closet.

From what remains in your closet, put together several outfits, carefully identify a shopping plan based on what is missing to make the outfit complete and in ready-to-walk-out-the-door condition. Start a list or use the Essential Inventory Card, shown here and referred to in my book, Pretty Plus. You need at least two go-to outfits for every occasion of your lifestyle. This is the beginning of developing a shopping plan and building a wardrobe that works for YOU!

Body Frames: A Balancing Act

The inimitable Coco Chanel said “Fashion is architecture: it’s a matter of proportions,” so while my size (and budget) bars Chanel labels from my closet; Chanel wisdom thrives there. Proportion is about understanding your body frame, leading to my concept of Fade and Focus which will help you pick flattering, fashionable items every time you shop.

Your frame is the basic shape of your body, the size of one body part compared to others, regardless of how much you weigh. Did you know that your body frame can be likened to the shape of a diamond? So, why not call yourself, “a round diamond?” I do.

Pear Shape Diamond

Smaller through the arms, shoulders and breasts, however, has wider hips, tush, thighs and calves.

Balance wide hips by inserting a small shoulder pad your top.

Heart Shape Diamond

Broad and full through the arms, shoulders and ribcage, however, narrows through the hips, thighs, and legs.

Use dark, muted colors on top and bold shades or patterns on the bottom.

Marquise Shape Diamond

Thinner arms, shoulders, hips, tush and legs, however, has a full tummy.

Wear tops that are fitted through the arms and shoulders and fall into an A-line - interesting patterns through the tummy can actually distract from puffiness.

Round Shape Diamond

Round and full through the arms, shoulders, back, tummy, hips and thighs, however, has a noticeable waist and shapely legs. If you’re confused about which diamond shape you are – if you’re curvy but proportionate - and have a waist, this is your frame.

Wear dresses and skirts that hit the bottom of your knee to show off shapely legs.

Emerald Shape Diamond

Wide and full from the shoulders and arms through the hips, thighs and legs and has no appreciable indentation at the waist. If you’re confused about your frame – and you’re proportionate but straight up and down, this is your frame.

Wear items that that have gentle curvy lines embedded through cut or pattern.

Stop hiding behind your clothes. Wear sleeker items where you can to promote a shapely, smart silhouette. Not being aware of your shape causes the biggest mistakes and wastes money. Knowing which diamond you are, however, is the beginning of manufacturing the silhouette you seek, consistently.

GIVE-AWAY! What I Look For In An Anchor Piece

I love this pink jacket! This jacket is a great example of an anchor piece, it is also what I call a go-to item, and they often overlap.

I look for three things in an anchor piece:

It has the muscle to be the backbone of many outfits, and can reach across the different facets of my lifestyle: casual, career and special occasion.
It is a go-to item, it flatters every time.
Its coloration and fabrication make it easy to identify the right accessories.

Here’s why the Sparkle Stretch Knit Jacket, which I’m wearing in this video, works for me.

It has the muscle to work with one of my three signature looks: the long, uninterrupted column of black underneath (tank top and skirt or slacks,) giving me casual, career and dressy options. It will also work with a white lace tank top and jeans.
It is cut well and the fabric drapes lean but doesn’t cling: flattering princess seaming, vertical lines of detail (seams and buttons) both of which are emphasized by leaving the jacket partially open.
The fabric is shot with a gold metallic thread so I know that gold jewelry will accessorize well and the pink color flows right into the coordinating print floral scarf, which together, polish the outfit.

An anchor piece doesn’t have to be a jacket, but let’s consider these top pieces for now, each one could be a go-to item:

Strategic Black and Other Comfort Zones

Imagine standing in front of your closet still half asleep and instinctively knowing what to reach for, when you need an outfit that will make you feel pretty and confident in a snap. Reach for strategic black: You know this outfit will work every time – that’s what I call a comfort zone!

Strategic Black requires that you know yourself. What part of your body do you want to accentuate and what part do you want to minimize? Strategic Black, using black (or deep muted) coloration in a flat matte jersey (or similar fabrication) to minimize AND bursts of color or interest (within the garment, outfit or accessories) to focus attention. If it’s all black, it may be spectacular, but it’s not “strategic” - every wardrobe has room for both!

Especially after the holidays, life is just easier when you have identified at least two strategic black outfits for each occasion of your lifestyle – casual, career and special occasion. There should never be a time when you feel frustrated because you have “nothing to wear.” Here are a few easy examples of strategic black:

Muzzle the Scale: Empowerment is Not a Number

The title of this week's blog was inspired by the work of Geneen Roth, author of Women Food and God.

"You're sailing along in life, feeling pretty good about everything, even your body. No, it isn't perfect, but it is yours and it's doing what it's supposed to do - mowing the lawn, ironing your skirt, playing baseball with the kids. Then you get on the scale. You weigh more than you thought you did, and within a nanosecond, the scary voice in your mind begins to rant: 'You're fat, you're a failure, you don't deserve to feel good about anything!' Suddenly everything that was right before you stepped on the scale is wrong."

What's wrong with this picture? The number on the scale says how much you weigh but not who you are, where you stand, what you achieve, how you love - or even, how good you look. Perhaps these are the benchmarks that matter. When you think of phenomenal women, I doubt the scale is a relevant tool of assessment at all. I doubt they are putting their life on hold weighting for the scale to reflect a lower number before living their life to the fullest.

What makes some women phenomenal? How do some women manage to get it all done? Anais Nin said, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage."

Rockin' the Red Dress

For the last 50 years, the movie industry has been captivated by a woman in red. For good reason: there's something about a red dress, especially on Valentine's Day, that can really rev up your star power.

My secret to rockin' a red dress is threefold:

1. Choose hosiery and heels (even a kitten heel) in the same coloration to lengthen and narrow your silhouette, black with black, nude with silver or gold. If you are a person of color, choose pewter or bronze. You want your shoes to match your skin tone as closely as possible.

2. Select sexy, feminine accessories like an evening bag or bold jewelry. Choose accessories that are bold and significant enough for women of our stature.

3. Wear a firm, full-length slip underneath. The slip should be fitted through the bust and drape snuggly from a high, empire waist, and that will help create a flattering shape, smooth out bumps for an overall toned quality. Did I mention the color? Black. The texture? Satin. And that will take care of the rest of the evening!

New Year's Resolutions: Silence the Hungry Heart

My relationship with food caused the metaphor "didn't fit in" to become my literal truth, pushing me to the outskirts of certain social circles, including fashion circles. Food became my knee-jerk reaction to everything: celebration, sorrow, boredom and friendship. Each new January, for more than I care to count, I would resolve to lose weight...and falter within days (if not hours).

I'm not sure what I was afraid of - life or living it plus size - I thought dieting was the answer to everything. Then life dealt me three awakenings and I learned the only thing I had feared was fear itself.

A diet was not the answer for me. I decided to make fashion fun and to make its accoutrements work for me. I decided to stop the pity party and launch a pretty party. I identified one area in particular that detracted from my overall appearance and turned it into my star-quality signature. I'll reveal that and my three awakenings to you in time, as we get to know each other better.

I've learned that there is no enemy. Today my New Year's resolutions focus on nurturing those I love and me as well.

It wasn't always that simple for me. I haven't always felt beautiful. I weighed over 200 pounds when I graduated from high school. I've been on every diet. All the signs are there, seeing big yellow school buses on the roads, pools preparing to close, and every once in a while a breeze of cool air comes our way. We all have to admit it; fall is on its way. Living on the east coast, we show a sign of each season, and as much as I love summer, by the time fall rolls around I am ready to welcome it. It is a nice change to wear long sleeve tee's and feel comfortable in pants. The temperature is still warm enough to wear sandals and flip flops, but enough of an evening breeze that you can comfortably wear a light jacket. You also can't help but be interesed in the new clothes that come out for fall, especially if you are the type of person who loves to see new styles and trends!

As we prepare for another change in season, remember, there is a bright-side to the end of summer, you get to go shopping!

Is it just me or is the weather this year absolutley crazy?! A record number of blizzards this winter, and to top it off a blazing hot summer to say the least! However, we all still have to remember that we are in the middle of one of the best seasons (vastly decided by age, kids love it- parents often dread it) of the year. The carefree days of summer, people seem to be in better moods, due to the great energy we get from the sun, or is it the wonderful creative of Air Conditioning? Watch Out! Maryland (and the rest of the eastern shore) is preparing for a heat wave this weekend. Break out the swimsuits, frozen drinks and reserve your spot on the beach! Maybe wishful (and a little extreme) thinking but I can't help but be excited about the upcoming 80 degree temperatures we will be experiencing in the coming days. With lingering thoughts of the double blizzard that hit us a mere 2 months ago this warm weather could not have come at a better time. Hopefully this beautiful weather will finally get rid of all my memories of snow. Imagine this, for the first time in a few years us ladies will be able to wear much needed spring colored dresses, and open toed shoes for Easter and not freeze!

Enjoy this coming weekend's weather, and for many the extended Easter Holiday from all of us at Ulla Popken!

To others it is a way of looking on the bright side of life. After all, you will notice the more often you have a positive outlook the better you will feel. You will also notice more and more people are naturally attracted to a positive attitude!

If you are living on the East Coast you know we have had a hard hit of winter weather this past weekend, and we are sure to get more in the coming days. I can remember being a little kid and getting so excited when it snowed, the sleigh riding and snowball fights were far more exciting than a typical day. Now that I have grown up I only enjoy it when there are a few inches; enough to blanket the ground, and little enough to quickly clear the streets! If you feel like this is too much of a winter wonderland for comfort remember there are plenty of ways to stay entertained while staying at home.

Cuddle up with a good book, play a game you haven't played in years, shop the internet, make a home-made dinner from scratch, or write in a journal. Take this time to slow down your busy, hectic life and do something YOU enjoy.
