The Long & Short of it...

We need to know what you think about lengths. There have been quite a few comments on previous posts about top and pant lengths. So, we started wondering, "How do you really feel about this issue?" Please dish -- and, be specific. Tops, pants, skirts, dresses, and coats.

Take a quick look at Step 2 of the Ulla Popken Size Chart (http://ullapopken.com/article.asp?ai=120) to see our general guidelines for graded lengths on tops. Remember, that this is general information. Actual lengths will vary by the design, fabric, and fit of each style.

Now, it's up to you!

I look at lenghts all the time. I like tops that are 33 inches long in a size 28 and I like the fact that I can see what the length or each top is on Ulla's website. I also like that Ulla has cotton tops in the length that I like. I have shorter legs and wish there could be a regular fit 29 inch pant.

I've commented before on the lengths of tops. I am "blessed" with a long torso and a big bust. I wear a size 28.

I cannot wear anything shorter than about 31" and even with a 31" top--its success or failure will depend on the cut of the pants. I feel safer with 32 or longer and I prefer the "tunics" at 33 or 34. Lately those have been in short supply.

I would love to see more of your tops available in longer lengths.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on our tops lengths. Seems like many women are looking for tunics -- or, at least longer tops.

On the other hand, we've received a few requests for petite pants. Now is the time to blog in and let us know where you stand!

I purchased this outfit PLAID JACKET Item#: 74320, including the shoes and bracelet. I wish you could have more "ready put-together outfits" like this one. Also, I am 5ft 4in. and wear size 24 so although I love your long tops, I wish the pants would come in woman's petite. Somehow the dresses and skirts seem to cater exclusively to tall women. I wish you could include some looks for shorter women. Thanks.

I am "only" a size 18, but I like tops that will at least cover my waist line so that they can be tucked in or, if knit, cover the waistband of my slacks, skirt or jeans.

Just placed an order for some tops & blouses and it is always an issue whether they will be long enough for me. I need a shirt that is long enough to hide my tummy and 31" just doesn't work for my shape. Most people my shape do not wear their tee shirts tucked in but hang loose -- even in your catalog and there's nothing worse than a too short top.

Dusters, long shirts and cardigan sets in flowing fabrics are a gem to find. A simple tee shirt of camisole can be worn underneath them and still look great.

Here's a quick Heads Up for those of us who are looking for shorter Skirts/Dresses... Ulla Popken is offering shorter dresses and skirts beginning in the Spring 2008collection (already online!)You will find some lengths in 31", 42", 44", and 48". If we see a good response on these we will continue.

It's really helpful for us to know how tall some of our customers are. If most women are looking for tops to fall a few inches below the waistline -- then, we would like to know how tall you are. This is very important when working on the fit and drape of the tops. And, I promise to pass along your Comments!

I'm 5'8", size 28/30, and I want shirts to come a couple of inches below my waist. If they come halfway to my knees, which the 'tunic' 32-33" lengths do, they tend to cling to my belly, which is not a look I really care for. If they're too short, that's unattractive as well. 29" or 30" works great for me, but tends to be hard to find.

Anonymous,

You raised a really good point. It all depends how we want to wear the tops. I like to wear a 'relaxed fit' tunic that give a little more room in the waist and hips. But, for blouses with pants, I like to have the top a little shorter.

I hope you find that the size chart length info is helpful when you shop.

It seems like most of us wear a size 28/30. That's my size.

The perfect length for all tops for me is 29", 30" or 31" long.

If it's shorter than 29", my tummy and butt show, which I won't allow. If it's longer than 31", it's very unflattering.

I'm about 5'4" and wear a 20 to 22 depending on cut etc. I have a large bust size and tummy. Nothing shorter than a 32" length will cover my tummy, but 34" is too long. Also, dusters are too long. I thought they would make me look taller but I think I actually look shorter, frumpy, and swimming in too much fabric.

The tops length shown with Ulla Popken's product descriptions is based upon size 28/30. And, you will find that most of the Spring 2008 tops will be around 31". I hope this is helpful.
I think the fabric and drape of any top (shoulders, arm length, hips) is as important at the length.
Any thoughts on this?

Thank you Ulla Popken for being so accessible online (I live in a remote location with little shopping), having such a user-friendly site, and for listening to our comments. You are the best!

I am a size 20/22 and 5'8" and pear shaped. I appreciate that your tops are generally longer length because I very much dislike my butt showing. I search for 32" tops only unless I will be layering them under a shirt, then I want about 30 or 31". I wish that you had more A line shirts, skirts, dresses and coats. O yes.

I dislike low front tops, but don't want turtlenecks. Why aren't there more nice necklines that are closer to the neck? I am not trying to attract looks to my bust.

I like pants that are almost straight-leg in order to balance out the hip, so they need to taper little, or taper at the knee then flare. Plus the fabric needs to hold its shape. There is a problem with inseam length in that we all have different leg lengths. Is it possible to make some pants unhemmed so we can sew them at anywhere from 28 to 34 inches? I have seen men's pants like that. I need a 32" inseam, so basically can't use any of your pants.

I love this website and your clothes and tell people about them all the time! Thank-you from Canada!

WLWINGS,

We're glad that you're glad! It's always nice to hear from a happy customer. You provided excellent information that has been passed along to the Buying Department.
The suggestion for un-hemmed pants is a very good idea!

Keep 'em coming.

I am a frequent and dedicated Ulla Shopper! I love the style, quality and selection you have for us lovely larger women. However, I ONLY buy shirts that are 32" minimum. I wuold love it if there were more 33" shirts. Some of the cutest things on the site are only 30! That doestnt cover my problem area since I am almost 5'9", the longer the better for me. I would be thrilled if Ulla offered more Tall shirt selections in ALL the size ranges!!

I am another customer glad you are asking this question - I would really love to see pants with a longer leg (about 2" longer then what is usually the standard length for your pants - the "tall" jeans are a good length...

Love the longer tops too - and a few plunging necklines are good (I am single - I am still trying to call attention to "the girls"!)

thanks!!

Got what I asked for! Lotsa requests for longer clothes. Especially the tops, right?

I know this is an old post but wanted to add my two cents! I like longer length tops 32 inches or more. Although I am fairly short, (5'4"), I wear a 28/30 and I'm apple shaped so I want the top to flow past my mid section not highlight it! Some of your recent 36 inch tunics have been wonderfully flattering.

On the other hand, I wish you carried some shorter length pants and skirts and dresses. I can't buy your skirts because they drag on the floor and hemming would ruin the design, and your dresses always reach my ankles. I bought a great Ulla jacket recently (the grey herringbone military style one with velvet trim) but I know the pants would be too long and the cute ankle trim would be unhemmable.

Maybe you could carry a few petite lengths for pants, skirts and even a few dresses? Ulla used to do that and some other brands have petite length for some pants at least. or offer more pants in shorter lengths -- to me "cropped" pants are just pants! Thanks!

I buy for two women. One is short (5'4") the other tall (6'1"). Both need tops in longer lengths than what is generally offered.

As for pant lengths, one needs petite and the other extra long. I can buy pants and alter them for one, but there is no way to make them longer for the taller woman.

It seems strange that many Ulla dresses come in 50-52" lengths, but the pants and tops not so long!

Hello I just received Catalog 42204 and was very disappointed by the lack of natural fiber clothing. Back page has 3 attractive dresses all from 100% woven polester, 1 is wovern rayon. I see some linen, but most seems to be polyester. Thee use to carry cotton item.
